NEW CHALLENGE IN SORTING RECYCLED DOMESTIC WASTE
Tong Peal Engineering is helping Mid UK Recycling in sorting glass
from compostible waste collected in the ‘third bin’ by an
increasing number of local authorities.

The Lincolnshire firm, which processes domestic waste from a
number of authorities, has installed a new line at its Caythorpe plant,
near Grantham, to handle up to 25 tonnes/hour, separating
compostible kitchen and garden waste from items of glass.

The refuse is tipped into a giant ten-tonne hopper and then passes
through a specially designed ‘teaser’ unit which spreads and levels
it on a conveyor belt, making it easier for workers to sort the two
different types of waste. The kitchen and garden waste is
pulverised and made into compost.

Mid UK Recycling is located on a purpose built 6-hectare (15-acre)
site where the materials recycling facility is unique due to the large range of wastes that can be recycled on one site. The
reprocessing now extends to mixed papers, cardboard, plastics,
metals, food wastes: including supermarket returns, construction
and demolition wastes, woodwastes, glass and greenwaste
composting.

"Tong Peal Engineering has been an integral part of the planning
process," says Chris Mountain, managing director of Mid UK
Recycling. "Their ability to understand the end products and
convert that to engineered processing allows for an excellent long
term working relationship. The after-sales service backup and
support has surpassed my expectations".

"As the recycling industry develops, there is a need to design
equipment for doing new tasks," says Charles Tong, managing
director of Tong Peal Engineering, of Spilsby, Lincolnshire. "It’s a
new challenge for our designers who are more familiar with
agricultural and industrial materials but, with the increasing
pressure to recycle, the ability to handle and sort waste more
efficiently becomes more crucial."
